California Funders for Boys and Men of Color is deeply saddened to mark the passing of James Bell. James was a trailblazer in the criminal justice reform movement, dedicating his life to dismantling racial and ethnic disparities within the juvenile justice system. He worked tirelessly to build pathways to opportunity for working-class youth and families, helping to dismantle the school-to-prison pipeline and promote systems rooted in equity, care and well-being.
In 2001, James founded the W. Haywood Burns Institute, a groundbreaking organization that has worked with hundreds of jurisdictions across the country to advance equity in justice systems. His leadership helped shift how local and national institutions think about safety, accountability and fairness.
