What is the most pressing issue for California’s boys and men of color today?
If by any chance there’s a shortcoming, lapse in judgment or infraction committed by a boy or young man of color, too much emphasis is put on the behavior or action. Not nearly enough attention and investment is drawn to the “why,” which is often rooted in deep intergenerational trauma coupled with a lack of resources to alleviate it.
One call to action to your philanthropic peers to support and sustain the movement to build thriving communities for boys and men of color?
We need to continue being proactive, unapologetic, and relentless in this fight. While we celebrate the wins, we must deepen and double down on our overall investment.
What keeps you hopeful about the future?
I’m fortunate to have not only served within the boys and color movement for nearly a decade but also to have been a direct beneficiary of the work itself. I’ve watched it grow over time from multiple viewpoints, and one thing that I am proud to say is that it has withstood the test of time. What keeps me hopeful is that through every obstacle, attack, and fight, it’s still here and will remain here.
One thing you’ve read, watched, or listened to lately that inspires you or your work?
My mentor Daniel Guzmán shared with me “Estamos en la lucha,” or “We are in this fight.” That’s resonating with me at the moment.
